Watch out Google! Bing is coming for you!

  • http://blog.clayburngriffin.com/ Clayburn Griffin

Sounds great.  I might start using Bing for more than free Xbox points now.

  • Durant Imboden

Is Microsoft trying to define Bing as a “social search” engine, as opposed to a general search engine? That’s what this looks like. And it’s probably fine if you’re researching the purchase of a new refrigerator (“What do my friends think about GE vs. Amana?”), but the “social sidebar” just gets in the way and sends the wrong message to people who are researching topics that their friends can’t be expected to know anything about.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HMU4ST77QRTMA3WUTNZ52GBLSM Francisco

Sounds like they’re trying to get it all “Social” in an attempt to offload it to Facebook again in the future.  They’re revenue is slowly declining and more and more people are not using because of their lack or privacy

  • http://www.OfInteresttoMe.com/ Matt

When will these features be coming to Canada?

  • http://searchengineland.com/ Danny Sullivan

No set date. And sadly, Bing takes ages to roll things outside the US, if ever.

Very interesting developments. It needed a radical change to get Bing back in the game. Is this a tipping point?

Funny how the anti-Google bandwagon is rolling…just as it did with Microsoft…who own Bing…

So, Do I need to switch my search engine and set Bing to default? Because I’m getting twitter & facebook’s post on Bing!

  • http://www.facebook.com/the.nathaniel.bailey Nathaniel Bailey

In a way its good that bing is finally making a move towards keeping up with google, but on the other hand, that means we will again now have to keep an eye on our bing listings if people start to make the switch to bing.

Don’t get me wrong that’s not a bad thing, it just means a little more work to make sure we keep both SEs happy again lol

But I guess only time will tell whether more people start using bing or not?

  • http://bestseoproduct.com/how-to-do-seo-on-your-own/ How to do seo on your own

It is just a myth and only a dream that Bing will ever cross Google and will become better than Google. It is nothing more than a lost player who is still motivated.

  • http://www.zhrodague.net/ Drew from Zhrodague

Social search? This is exactly what I need while searching for porn through Bing! Oops, I should get back to work, I meant to say.

  • http://www.OfInteresttoMe.com/ Matt

Yeah, it’s really frustrating. Bing Canada still doesn’t have any Facebook integration even though the US has had it for several years. Bing’s iOS app isn’t available here, and it was less then a year ago that the Smartphone version of Bing launched.

But it’s not just Bing; Yahoo and Google are the same way. None of the feature Yahoo have released to differentiate it from Bing are here in Canada, and Google.ca does not have Search Plus Your World, although that one I’m not to up set about.

Hopefully the new look Bing launches here soon. I tried it out by setting my location to the US, (Bing.com by itself still redirects do Canada results) and I love it. I can live without the Social features but once I used the new cleaner look it’s hard going back.

What really fascinates me is this:
Google rolled out search + social = massive outcry.
Microsoft’s little toy rolled out social on their engine = massive praise.
    Hypocrites…

You might not receive the next ms press release, and then were are you?!

=>   I’m neither a Google muppet-groupie nor a Microsoft fan-girl;  however, it is VERY OBVIOUS and APPARENT for all to clearly see that… —  while (socially obtuse) GOOGLE Corporation arrogantly, clumsily and sloppily tried to COERCIVELY force “SEARCH PLUS YOUR WORLD” down our throats and also POLLUTE their main search results, making those search results LESS RELEVANT & LESS USEFUL (by the way, guess what: “SPYW = SPY-ware, SPY-world),
    —  instead Microsoft has *surprisingly & admirably) shown a thoughtful, insightful approach to designing & displaying their supplemental “SOCIAL search results” (which emanate from a more comprehensive range of sources than Google); Bing’s supplemental “SOCIAL search results” info. is displayed via well-organized & neatly convenient SIDEBAR channels that are optional & readily (easily) accessible via cute user-friendly icons (win-win !) — Microsoft is actually demonstrating social awareness & Respect for consumers & product users !

Really? So, if Restaurant A serves a hamburger that I don’t like, but then Restaurant B serves me a hamburger that I do like … I’m being hypocritical?

  • http://www.maxminzer.com/ Max Minzer

Based on your “example” Matt, the hypocrisy is about the same identical cheese (adding social to search)  being used in both hamburgers. So, yes – you’re hypocritical.
