Twitter started 2011 with a new record: 6,939 tweets were sent at four seconds after midnight in Japan. Twitter says that TPS rate (tweets per second) is more than double the previous high of 3,283 TPS during Japan’s World Cup soccer/football win over Denmark last summer.

In a blog post detailing the new record, Twitter also shared a video that shows Twitter activity as the world celebrated New Year’s Day 2011. It’s pretty stunning to watch the circles get bigger and lights get brighter as the calendar turns from 2010 to 2011.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t also mention Facebook’s announcement that its users uploaded 750 million photos over the holiday weekend, which has to be some kind of record. Ironically, Facebook chose to announce that on Twitter, not on the Facebook blog.
