I’d like to thank again everyone who helped us narrow down the choices for a Search Engine Land logo. We came to a final decision, shown above. The feedback was incredibly helpful in getting to the final design. Here’s a bit more about why we went with it.
The top choice in the voting was for a logo that made use of the gears-as-hill metaphor. Gears? Search engines. You know, engines have gears! Hills? Search Engine Land. You know, a place, a land with rolling hills, where the herds of Yahoos and Googles and Lives and Asks and others all run in the wilderness.
I know, not everyone gets that at first glance. I know, search engines have chips, not gears. Still, we like it.
In fact, the third and fourth most favored logos also made use of the gears-as-hills concept. Add those votes together, and we took it as a sign people liked it.
No one seemed particularly happy that some of the logo choices made use of the word "Land" as almost an aside. Other logos made both words "Engine" and "Land" seem somehow less important than "Search." Our solution was to put them all on the same line.
That’s it! I know logos are tricky, and you can’t please everyone. But we like it, and we hope you’ll either love it too or grow to love it over time!
By the way, I can’t stress enough that the entire site will have an entirely different look when we formally launch on December 11. And no, it won’t be me doing it up using FrontPage! So please keep your minds open and your eyes peeled for a fresh, fast look we also think you’ll love.
