Yahoo has acquired Rivals.com, an online college sports site. Yahoo said this acquisition “will significantly expand the community offerings and open publishing capabilities of Yahoo! Sports.”

Although Yahoo did not discuss the financial matters of the agreement, paidContent.org suspects it was about $100 million.

Shannon Terry, Rival.com’s CEO, said,

Partnering with Yahoo! will help us build the next generation of Rivals’ products and services for hardcore and casual sports fans, and allow us to reach an entirely new fan base (after all, Yahoo! is the most-visited site on the Internet).

Jimmy Pitaro, General Manager, Yahoo Sports, said,

Hands down, Rivals.com provides the best coverage of college and high school sports on the Web, maintaining more than 100 college-specific sites and posting hundreds of updates each day. It also satisfies high school fans by following games and news in more than 35 states.

Rivals.com will perfectly complement Yahoo! Sports’ editorial coverage — the work of its 200 on-the-ground local writers, reporters, and publishers meshes well with what we’re doing at the national level.
