Yahoo Announces New Search Tools & Upgrades In Their Continued Battle To Win More Of The Search Market

yahoo-logoJust a day after the story broke that Yahoo wanted out of their deal with Microsoft, Yahoo’s senior vice president of search Laurie Mann commented on new search tools and upgrades that are scheduled to launch over the coming months. According to an article in Bloomberg News, some of the planned upgrades are being created along with Microsoft.

“We’ve got some really cool things in the pipeline, which we’ll be announcing and rolling out over the coming months,” said Mann.

After playing a key role in establishing Google as the world’s most popular search engine,  Marissa Mayer has been driven to increase Yahoo’s share of the search market since accepting the role of Yahoo CEO in July of 2012. According to Yahoo’s senior vice president of search, if anyone has the tools to do it, Mayer does, “She knows search better than pretty much anyone in the industry.”

Mann’s group is working to develop new search tools and search-based ads which, because of the deal with Microsoft, are served up via Bing. According to Mann, much of his team’s time is spent on mobile search these days.

Google is still the undisputed winner in search, earning 67 percent of all searches in March, according to a recent ComScore report. Yahoo earned 12 percent of search, and Microsoft took 17 percent.

From recent comments by Mayer, it appears she believes that Yahoo still has a chance to compete for Google’s search market share. The Bloomberg article referenced an interview with Mayer at the Wired Business Conference where she compared Yahoo’s future in search with a winemaker, “You can be a winemaker because you grow your own grapes, or you can be a winemaker because you do them in a certain style. Most of the innovation on search will happen in terms of the user interface.”

The jury is still out on whether or not Yahoo has enough “style” to gain more ground in the search market.

    When talking about Yahoo’s and Bing’s share of search, let’s remember that those numbers also include searches for…. ‘Google’.

    We can assume that the majority of people who have Bing or Yahoo! as their default hompage will not be typing Google.com into their browser, but performing a search for it instead – It might count as a search, but perhaps more importantly it’s also an ‘exit’ to a competitor!
