The latest SEO drama taking place on social media this week is around whether E-E-A-T and Core Web Vitals are Google ranking signals, ranking factors, or ranking systems.
In short, the answer is none of the above – they are direct ranking factors, signals, or systems. But does it even matter?
Google Search wants to rank content and webpages that users like. Will users like a webpage that is super slow to load, that is hard to read, and that has a horrible page experience? Nope. Does Google say if your INP score is below a specific threshold that you can’t rank in Google Search? Nope, Google does not say that. I get it, there has always been a lot of confusion around whether it is a ranking system or not – but Google is saying no, it is not.
I like how Glenn Gabe put it, when it comes to your scores, you should “check your blood pressure, but don’t go crazy if it’s 122 over 84.” If your Core Web Vitals scores are not great but you know the website performance is fine, then don’t go crazy with improving those scores.
