Google confirmed to Search Engine Land that the definition of top ads within its Help Center has changed to:
- “Top ads are generally above the top organic results, although top ads may show below the top organic search results on certain queries. Placement of top ads is dynamic and may change based on the user’s search.”
The update, which does not impact how performance metrics are calculated, was rolled out to make sure the terminology better reflects how ads can appear in Google Search.
Interestingly, this change was implemented after Google was spotted testing ads between search results back in October – could this update suggest that the pilot is progressing? We’ll keep you posted.
