Well, there was a surprise. A Mr Men logo on Google, and another, and another! Little Miss logos, too. All for the May 9 birthday of author / illustrator Roger Hargreaves, who would be 76, if he were alive today.

I know the Mr Men and Little Miss series well, from my years living in Britain. Hargreaves was British, and the characters are part of growing up for any child. But the special Google logos — called “doodles” — aren’t restricted to just Britain. Hargreaves is being honored worldwide.

In addition, Google’s not just showing one logo but several, recognizing different characters. There are 16 different logos running in all.

That’s more than Google’s ever done on one day to recognize something, to my knowledge — and I’ve studied Google’s special logos pretty closely (see Those Special Google Logos, Sliced & Diced, Over The Years).

Here’s today’s treats:

1) Mr Tickle:

2) Mr Messy:

3) Mr Dizzy:

4) Mr Bump (my wife’s favorite):

5) Little Miss Chatterbox:

6) Mr Uppity & Little Miss Naughty:

The logos appear randomly. Reload your page, and you’ll see a different one. Some seem to appear more frequently than others (getting Mr Small to appear took a number of reloads).

In all, 17 of the nearly 100 characters are honored (17, not 16, because two different characters appear in one of the logos). Google appears to have either gotten permission to do the logos or, if not, the publishers aren’t concerned.

In fact, according to the official Facebook page for Mr Men & Little Miss, the crew is “very excited” as this post says:

Enjoy your time on Google, Mr Men & Little Miss!
