Emmy Noether Google Logo Pays Tribute To One Of The Most Influential Mathematicians Of The 20th Century
Albert Einstein claimed Noether was, "... the most significant creative mathematical genius thus far produced."
Today’s Google logo marks the 133rd birthday of the world renown mathematician Emmy Noether. Born on this date in 1882 in Erlangen, Germany, Noether’s contribution to abstract algebra and theoretical physics won her much acclaim within her field.
According to doodle illustrator Sophie Diao, Einstein called Noether, “The most significant creative mathematical genius thus far produced.”

Like many women of her time (and arguably, still today), Noether was forced to overcome sexist ideologies within her field of study.
As a student, she was only allowed to “audit” courses, and as a professor, she endured much push back from fellow faculty who did not see fit to have a woman teaching men.
Rising above the many obstacles she faced as a female, Noether is credited with proving the physical relationship between conservation law and differentiable symmetry – defined as Noether’s Theorem. In their book Symmetry and the Beautiful Universe, physicists Leon Lederman and Christopher Hill claimed Noether’s Theorem was possibly as significant to the mathematical world as the Pythagorean Theorem.
To create today’s doodle, Daio said she wanted to highlight Noether’s numerous accomplishments and spotlight her influence on the world.
The following is a collection of Diao’s sketches that led to the final Google doodle on today’s homepage:
“In this doodle, each circle symbolizes a branch of math or physics that Noether devoted her illustrious career to,” writes Diao, “Noether’s advancements not only reflect her brilliance but also her determination in the face of adversity.”
