Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt and former Google SVP Jonathan Rosenberg have written a new book called How Google Works. Not yet published but available for pre-order, it’s a wide-ranging discussion of corporate management drawing upon the lessons the two men learned over a decade at Google.

Here’s how the promotional site describes the book:

The authors explain how technology has shifted the balance of power from companies to consumers, and that the only way to succeed in this ever-changing landscape is to create superior products and attract a new breed of multifaceted employees whom Eric and Jonathan dub “smart creatives.” Covering topics including corporate culture, strategy, talent, decision-making, communication, innovation, and dealing with disruption, the authors illustrate management maxims with numerous insider anecdotes from Google’s history, many of which are shared here for the first time.

By implication, according to the promises of the collateral, readers will learn how to apply the lessons of Google to their own companies and presumably unlock their potential or fix barriers to success.

Because the book isn’t out we can’t offer any sort of review or critique at this time.

As we read the book we should ask whether Google’s massive growth would have happened anyway because of the company’s technology and market position. There’s also the question of whether the management maxims or lessons of Google can be applied to other corporate environments, especially more traditional companies.

This is Schmidt’s second book. His first book, with Jared Cohen, was The New Digital Age.
