Former Google CEO and Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt once said that “someone, somewhere in a garage is gunning for us.” Does such a company exist right now – one that has a legitimate shot at becoming the next big thing in search? Could it be OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT?
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has spoken about wanting to reinvent search, branding Google “boring” and confessing his hatred of ads within SERPs. He said:
- “I kind of hate ads just as an aesthetic choice. I think ads needed to happen on the internet for a bunch of reasons, to get it going, but it’s a momentary industry. The world is richer now. I like that people pay for ChatGPT and know that the answers they’re getting are not influenced by advertisers.”
Ad-free search is not new. It also hasn’t worked (so far). But Altman thinks it would be “cool” to actually pull it off. Read our deep dive by Search Engine Land Managing Editor Danny Goodwin.
