MapQuest’s New Commute App Helps Optimize Drive Times
MapQuest has introduced a new app for Google Play and iOS: “Commute.” Just as the name suggests, it’s a stand-alone app intended to help drivers manage and optimize their daily driving to and from work.
Commute is the third stand-alone mobile app produced by MapQuest. The others are a gas prices app and a travel blogging app for iPhone only. Commute asks users to input their home and work addresses upon sign up, as well as the regular times they leave for and from work.
According to the company, “Commute proactively monitors the road conditions along your route and alerts you to travel times and incidents so you know what to expect on your way to and from work.” It also provides 15-minute notifications prior to departure about traffic and drive times.
At any point during the day, outside of normal commute hours, users can open the app and get traffic conditions and ETA estimates. It also shows routing back to work or home if you’re in a different location.
Commute also prompts users to download the main MapQuest navigation app for alternate routing and turn-by-turn directions.
MapQuest’s Brian McMahon told me in email that Commute is something of an experiment. The company is trying to determine how much demand exists and whether to include Commute’s functionality in the main MapQuest app. He added that the company has a number of feature and improvements planned for the app as well.
