I wrote yesterday about expanded local search results on Google.com, and today there are two other local expansions from Google worth talking about.
First is the announcement that Google Suggest has been launched internationally, and with it the search suggestions have been localized for local and cultural factors. The prime example Google shares is a search for “liver” — in the U.S., search suggestions might be about the body part, but in the UK, the suggestions will focus on Liverpool.

Google Suggest is now available in 51 languages.
The other locally-flavored announcement this week is the expansion of local news. Google says it’s now available to news searchers in the UK, India, and Canada.
Some users will see the local news section automatically on the Google News home page. If you don’t, you can add it by using the “Personalize this page” tool.

I really like the depth to which you showed the imapct of this. It’s significant despite some of the gaps, including the lack of local inserts with singular terms vs. plural that seem more likely to generate the 3- and 10-packs. The rankings world is a rough ride already and will only get crazier if the regular natural results go local this way. Maybe they should if user intent can be determined a great deal. I’m all for giving engines some room to be wrong sometimes. As they move to the natural waters, there may be a danger of pushing down valuable results if they decide to display both national and local listings for a non-geo term. Now that will be interesting.
