interesting points – be them from my part a little watery… links do indeed carry some real juice in biig G but as for Bing – they have some catching up to do – google bot is still the most prominent bot into any of my websites.

it seems the points of G’s algo are indeed fixed and thus all your best practices outlined above will indeed have some impact – but generally the philosophy of self reciprocation anchor texts is a little unsightly and indeed verging on spammy – check the first page of the casino serp and you will see that non of these are using the self reciprocating anchor. yet they rank first page.

I think that it really depends what kind of links you get, based on page ranking. It might not help you if you have a lot of low-traffic page links compare to a high PR page. What do you think? See the “Quantity vs Quality paragraph to see what I mean.

I don’t see it that way, what I’ve outlined is basic SEO 101 and works the majority of the time. Very competitive niches require competitive tactics and large numbers of links to remain ahead, it’s why you’ll not see a definite pattern to their ranking success.

It might not, but then again, if those low traffic pages sit on topically relevant sites and are hosting your keyword rich anchors, you’ll see some ranking benefit. Even if they’re not topically relevant, any indexed page hosting your clean text link helps with your link popularity and eventually helps you rank.
