Today’s Google logo marks the July 4th holiday with an animated short of a marching band performing John Philip Sousa’s patriotic “Stars and Stripes Forever.”
The logo was designed by Google Doodler Betsy Bauer, with art direction mimicking the classic 1950s cartoons created by the UPA Animation Studio – the same studio that gave us the Mr. Magoo cartoon series.
Bauer says she wanted to make sure the logo’s “story” felt sweet and and sincere, but still celebrated Independence Day.
“When I was a toddler, my dad was a high school band director and baritone player in a couple of community ensembles. I have a lot of fond childhood memories of chasing fireflies during lawn concerts on town squares,” says Bauer, “I was incredibly excited to be able to combine two of the greatest influences in my life into this doodle – hand drawn animation and marching band.”
Google noted the rendition of “Start and Stripes Forever” used in the logo was performed by the US Marine Marching Band.
