Google Ads extends Demand Gen cost adjustments from 3 weeks to 60 days

Google Ads extended the duration of its performance-based cost adjustment beta for Demand Gen campaigns, increasing the maximum adjustment period from three weeks to 60 days.

The change gives eligible advertisers a longer window for Google to automatically adjust campaign costs when conversion performance falls below expectations.

What’s changing. Google’s updated documentation confirms that performance-based cost adjustments can now remain active for up to 60 days, compared with the previous three-week period.

The feature is designed to help eligible Demand Gen campaigns achieve results closer to their bidding targets by retroactively reducing costs when conversion performance is lower than predicted.

How it works. During the learning phase, Google’s automated bidding systems may have limited conversion data, making campaign performance less predictable.

If actual conversion performance falls below Google’s predictions, the system may automatically adjust advertising costs downward.

These adjustments aim to bring campaign results closer to the advertiser’s target CPA or ROAS.

Why we care. The longer adjustment window could provide additional protection against inefficient spending while Demand Gen campaigns gather conversion data and optimize toward their targets.

However, advertisers should not treat the feature as a guaranteed discount or a substitute for accurate conversion tracking and effective campaign management.

What advertisers need to know:

  • Automatic activation: Eligible campaigns can receive cost adjustments within five days of launch.
  • Extended duration: Adjustments can now remain active for up to 60 days, subject to campaign or account limits.
  • Limited eligibility: The feature applies to qualifying Demand Gen campaigns using tCPA or tROAS bidding.
  • No manual setup: Google automatically determines whether and when adjustments apply.

The catch. Not every Demand Gen campaign will qualify.

Google considers factors including account age, account activity, conversion tracking quality, bidding practices and budget settings.

Meeting the baseline requirements does not guarantee that adjustments will be applied, and eligible campaigns may receive them only on certain days.

How reporting works. Cost adjustments are automatically reflected in campaign reporting, with final costs showing the amount advertisers are responsible for paying.

Google says adjustments can take up to five days to appear in reporting after a campaign starts.

Importantly, there are no separate credits, line items or notifications identifying when an adjustment has been applied.

The bottom line. Google Ads has increased the maximum Demand Gen performance-based cost adjustment period from three weeks to 60 days. Eligible tCPA and tROAS campaigns may now receive automatic downward cost adjustments for longer, although availability and savings are not guaranteed.
