Twitter Sees Triple-Digit Growth Outside North America

Twitter usage is growing rapidly around the world, with most regions experiencing triple-digit growth between June 2009 and June 2010. That’s according to a new comScore report out today.

Nearly 93 million Internet users worldwide visited Twitter.com in June, comScore says — that’s up 109% over the previous June. The growth was even more dramatic in Latin America (up 305%) and Asia Pacific (up 243%). All regions except North America showed triple-digit growth.

ComScore’s numbers don’t include Twitter usage via apps like Tweetdeck or Twhirl, and it doesn’t count Twitter.com visits from mobile sources or public computers (such as Internet cafes).

Indonesia and Brazil have the highest individual Twitter penetration. ComScore says more than 20% of Internet users in those two countries visited Twitter.com in June. The U.S. is tops in Twitter.com access from smartphones, with an 8.3% reach among those users.

Great article Matt; no surprise that Twitter is growing, but it’s interesting to see how quickly this is happening. I just watched a video on social media that compared how long it took for various technologies to reach 50 million users, like the radio (38 years), TV (13 years), internet (4 years), iPod (3years), and then showed that Facebook reached 200 million users in a year. Interesting video with a lot of good factoids on social media. Here’s the link in case you haven’t seen it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFZ0z5Fm-Ng&feature=related

Also, it’s worthy to note that Twitter just introduced “Fast Follow” to allow people in the US to receive tweets on their phones even if they have not signed up for Twitter, which will surely propel the growth of US users.
