Amazon Ads taps Yelp to turn product purchases into local service leads
Amazon is moving further into local advertising with a new format that connects shoppers with service professionals from Yelp after they search for or buy products that may require installation or other help.
Why it matters. Amazon has enormous visibility into what consumers are buying. Sponsored Services turns those commerce signals into leads for local businesses, potentially making Amazon a new customer-acquisition channel for plumbers, electricians, movers and other service providers.
Driving the news. Amazon Ads unveiled Sponsored Services at unBoxed, its annual advertising conference.
The ads can appear on Amazon product detail, order confirmation and package tracking pages.
The service is launching in the U.S. with Yelp advertisers in eligible home and auto service categories.
How it works. Amazon can use the context of a shopper’s activity to surface a relevant local professional.
For example, someone buying a kitchen faucet could see an ad for a nearby plumber on the order confirmation page.
Shoppers can then choose “Call” to contact the business directly or “Quote” to submit a request for an estimate.

The interaction happens within the Amazon experience, reducing the steps between buying a product and finding someone to install or service it.
Why we care. Amazon’s high-intent shopping signals into leads for services, not just product sales. A purchase can now signal the next customer need – buy a faucet, need a plumber; buy an auto part, need installation – giving local businesses a way to reach consumers at an unusually relevant moment.
Behind the scenes. Yelp supplies the network of local service providers. Yelp says its platform includes millions of local businesses and more than 300 million reviews. Sponsored Services can feature professionals including plumbers, electricians, landscapers, home cleaners, roofers and movers.
What they’re saying. “Sponsored Services connects local businesses with Amazon shoppers at the exact moment they need a service,” Jenn Donohue, director of Local Ads at Amazon Ads, said in the announcement.
Yelp’s Katy Lightsey said the partnership is designed to turn everyday Amazon purchases into potential jobs for service professionals.
The big picture. Amazon has steadily been building advertising products aimed at businesses whose transactions don’t necessarily happen on Amazon.
The company has already introduced location-based interactive video ads, which let advertisers customize streaming campaigns using geography, and Geographic Insights and Activation, which uses Amazon’s retail signals to identify regional opportunities.
Sponsored Services pushes that strategy further by connecting Amazon’s purchase intent with an action that happens in the physical world.
Between the lines. The interesting asset isn’t simply another ad placement. It’s the timing.
A traditional local-services ad often tries to infer that someone needs a plumber or electrician from a search or browsing signal. Amazon can potentially identify that need from the product someone just bought.
That gives Amazon a way to monetize the moment after the transaction — while giving Yelp’s service professionals access to consumers whose purchases indicate they may be ready to hire someone.
What to watch. Sponsored Services is currently limited to eligible Yelp advertisers in U.S. home and auto services. Whether Amazon expands the model into more service categories, and whether commerce-driven service advertising becomes a larger part of its push beyond traditional retail media is yet to be seen.
