Today’s Google logo on its US and Mexico home pages has been replaced with a Doodle to mark the Day of the Dead, a traditional Mexican holiday devoted to departed souls.

Designed by artist Kevin Laughlin, the Doodle depicts a traditional Day of the Dead string of papel picado — decorative tissue made of perforated paper that is draped over windowsills and doorways during the three-day long festivities.

[blockquote cite = “Google Doodle Blog”]Día de los Muertos. Day of the Dead. Its name is decidedly somber, but Mexico’s celebration of its departed souls overflows with color, music, and the unmistakable fragrances of its wonderful cuisine. [/blockquote]

Day of the Dead events are commonly filled full of marigolds, sugar skulls and colorful decorations, along with traditional foods and music.
