Google Yet To Make Headway On Cookies Pledge In Privacy Debate

Google and the other major search engines have all been criticized in both the US and Europe over privacy issues and consumer data retention. More generally, there’s an intensifying debate about behavioral ad targeting and privacy occurring on both sides of the Atlantic. The European authorities have been considerably more aggressive, however, in demanding action […]

Microsoft: Forget It On Paid Search Partnership, Google & Yahoo

So Yahoo’s going to partner with Google for a test of search ads? Better be only a test, Microsoft seems to be saying. Microsoft General Counsel Brad Smith just put out a statement suggesting that any partnership would likely be opposed on regulatory grounds, as Google would get more than 90 percent of the ad search market:

Google’s First Layoffs: 300 To Go From DoubleClick

Google Selling Performics — Thanks, Google!

Last month, I did an open letter to Google wishing they’d quickly sell off Performics, to avoid the conflict of having a search marketing firm that works to improve results on Google’s own search engine. Well, thank you Google! They’ve acted far more quickly than I would have hoped for, announcing today that the company […]

Last week, as you know, the EU gave approval to Google’s acquisition of DoubleClick for $3.1 billion. However, the deal closed at $3.24 billion, a mere $140 million more. Google Ad Manager Targets Medium-Sized Publishers, Seeks Broader AdSense Distribution

Google’s new Ad Manager (currently in a limited beta) is a free ad serving platform directed toward small and medium-sized publishers that don’t need a complex, customizable solution such as DoubleClick’s DART platform (which Google just acquired). The European Commission has approved the Google’s acquisition of DoubleClick, valued at $3.1 billion. The EU started their investigation in November 2007. Display advertising currently represents about 32 percent of total US online advertising, according to the IAB. That’s roughly $6.7 billion. Google already dominates the roughly $8.5 billion US search market. But Google’s Tim Armstrong told the Bear Stearns Media Conference in Palm Beach, Florida yesterday that Google expects, in the not-too-distant future, to have a […]

Microsoft’s Prize: Big Yahoo CPMs, Largest Display Share

On Friday comScore put out ad publisher site rankings. Unsurprisingly, Yahoo ranked as the top site with just under 19 percent of US online display advertising. MediaPost took this data and further analyzed it, finding that Yahoo enjoys the industry’s highest CPM rates at $12.65, more than $4 higher than the next highest site, MSNBC. […]

Can Google Save Yahoo By Taking Over Search?

Does Yahoo have any choice but to get purchased by Microsoft? Over the weekend, there’s been much analysis and discussion of other suitors. While Google isn’t seen as an outright buyer, there’s more talk that it could help Yahoo by taking over search ads in various counties, with reports on this out from the Wall Street Journal and Reuters.

Now back to news of that other acquisition that was dominating headlines and speculation until last Friday: Google-DoubleClick. However, […]

MSFT + YHOO: What Would Microsoft Yahoo Look Like?

The conference call has happened, and despite saying it has a plan to digest Yahoo, Microsoft didn’t share that with the world. Indeed, at one point it was said any plan depended on what Yahoo’s leadership would suggest. That means it’s time for What If. Some thoughts below from me and contributing editor Greg Sterling. […]
