Yahoo Search Assist At 1; Google Toolbar At 8

Break out the birthday candles for Yahoo’s Search Assist and Google’s Toolbar. Yahoo reminds us today that its Search Assist feature was launched a year ago this month. Search Assist is the feature that suggests words and phrases while you type in the Yahoo search box; it also suggests related concepts — something, Yahoo tells […]

Yahoo’s Inquisitor Now Available For Firefox & Internet Explorer

My favorite search browser plugin, Inquisitor, is now available for Firefox and Internet Explorer. Inquisitor was Apple Safari’s only solid third-party search browser plugin back in the day. Yahoo acquired them back in May and then provided an upgrade in mid-August. Now, Yahoo has announced they have made this plugin available for Firefox and IE.

ChunkIt, A New Information Extraction Add-On, Now Available

ChunkIt is a toolbar that digs deep into the links found on web pages, extracting “chunks” of information from those pages, allowing you to quickly find relevant content without having to click through on the links yourself. Think of the process you already use when scanning search results, or long web pages that are rich […]

Yahoo’s Poor Ad Targeting & Thoughts On Google-Yahoo

Previously, I wrote of how Yahoo’s recent press day proved disappointing to me. Time for part two of that: how the Google-Yahoo ad deal is supposed to help Yahoo. Oh, it might, but not for the reasons Yahoo put out — the idea it would somehow get advertisers it was missing. More about that below, […]

Waiting For Google Chrome To Launch

Obviously the big story of yesterday and today in the technology world is the impending launch of Google’s open-source browser Chrome. It will likely be available for download here later today. (TechCrunch and Google Blogoscoped have a few screenshots.) There are dozens and dozens of stories on Techmeme.

Google & Mozilla Extend Default Firefox Search Provider Deal

TechCrunch reports Google has extended a deal to be the default search engine in Firefox for an additional three years, to 2011. The news comes the day after Microsoft released a beta of IE8. The deal is somewhat ironic in that Google has lobbied to to prevent Microsoft from making itself the default search engine […]

Hey Firefox – Let Us Pick Our Own Search Engine!

So Firefox 3 has a new release candidate making news, suggesting that the browser is nearly done. May I suggest that the browser is nowhere near being done until the Mozilla Foundation drops its favoritism to Google and allow users to pick their own default search engine? And that Microsoft ought to be among those […]

Microsoft Wins Deal For Live Search To Be Default On HP Computers

For all the excitement about Microsoft Live Search Cashback, I think a new announcement out today is far more important to Live Search’s potential growth. It will be the default search engine on Hewlett-Packard computers sold in North America beginning in January 2009, winning the deal from Yahoo. HP is currently the world’s largest PC […]

Ask.com Adds More Sponsored Ads, Pushing Organic Results Below Fold

I was messing around with the Ask.com interface on my Mac and decided to compare some results between my Mac browser and Internet Explorer for PC. I noticed that Ask.com is now displaying five sponsored results for many keyword searches. The organic results are now below the fold, like they once were before dropping Jeeves.

From Browser To Digg Clone: The Short, Unhappy Life Of Netscape

Netscape has been reinvented several times since its acquisition by AOL in November 1998 — and all of these efforts have essentially failed. In addition to a browser, the Netscape brand had been associated with a portal and discount dial-up ISP (and still is) before Jason Calacanis turned the site into a Digg clone in […]

Yahoo’s Right Media Serves Up Trojan Ads For Three Weeks

Yahoo feeds Trojan-laced ads to MySpace and PhotoBucket users from The Register reports that Yahoo’s newly acquired Right Media served up ads with Trojan viruses for three weeks during the month of August. The flash ads reportedly contained a file that installed a Trojan back door on vulnerable Windows machines running Internet Explorer. The ads […]

Microsoft’s Adult & Pharma Referrals Are Search Quality Tests

I have been tracking a WebmasterWorld thread that has reports of weird Microsoft Live Search referral strings that come from Microsoft-owned IP blocks but show irrelevant keywords in the adult and pharmaceutical space. Today I reported that these findings are indeed valid and are official Microsoft tests. A Microsoft representative explained that these referral strings […]

Yahoo Adds Search Suggestions To Toolbar

The Yahoo Search Blog announced that downloads of the Yahoo Toolbar for Internet Explorer will now have “as you type” search suggestions functionality. Yahoo has been on a search suggestion frenzy lately, last month launching search suggestions on Yahoo.com and beta testing Yahoo Search Assist.

Google & Dell’s Revenue-Generating URL Error Pages Drawing Fire

Last year, Google signed a landmark deal to become the default search engine on new Dell computers, plus to bundle Google software. Now, people are noting anew that a consequence of the deal seems to be pushing Dell users to search results dominated by Google ads, rather than editorial listings. Google’s Browser Address Error Redirector […]

Live Search Maps Adds New Features And Firefox 3D Support

Microsoft added a range of new features to Live Search Maps, including Firefox support for Virtual Earth 3D. Some of the new capabilities are live right now, and some are going live later today. Below is a list of the new tools and features and their descriptions from the distributed press materials.

Fury Over Google’s Self Promotion & Wishing For Perspective

It feels like a bad week to be Google. Honestly, if there’s a tipping point, the freak-out that they’ve become the evil company they said they didn’t want to be seems to have arrived. Goodness knows there’s plenty to be concerned about with Google, as with any large powerful company. The entire Google could become […]

Google Toolbar For Firefox 3.0 Adds Great Features

Google Operating System reports that Google released a new toolbar for Firefox. The toolbar has many of the features of the Internet Explorer version but also has some features of its own. My favorite new feature is the ability to drag a file on your browser and it automatically add it to Google Docs & […]
