Scott, nice write-up! You are absolutely correct that there is no formulaic solution for great landing pages. You can get quick improvements with straightforward landing page best practices. But there is no substitute for quality content and design. Of course, you can’t make up for a poor product or service.

The funny thing is that most companies we talk to now want to know how we can use some sort of magic to make up for a lack of quality and volume of content in driving traffic. Further, they want us to provide automated relevancy for converting that traffic when clients are too lazy to provide quality content and don’t have a clear focus, specific business goals and they have put no thought into what the user needs and expects.

The key is to always create thoughtful content and think about the users needs. Then everything simply fits into place.
