Greg – Facebook is using Localeze as their data provider for the business information. So even if a business does not have a FB page they will have a Places page if they are within the Localeze data set. See Localeze official press release http://www.live-pr.com/en/localeze-to-provide-business-listings-for-r1048542958.htm

It will be very interesting to see how this plays out, especially a business’ Fan Page automatically becoming its Places page once they claim it.

As for the naming similarities, that is odd too, but not overly so. I just realized that there is a Yahoo Buzz, in addition to Google Buzz.

“Facebook Places will replace Facebook Fan Pages for local businesses once a business has claimed its Facebook Place page.”

I see some confusion on this point on on the web. It might lead some people to think that their Facebook Page is going to be wiped out. And that these businesses have lost control of their Facebook presence.

I believe we are going to see a pretty smooth merge of the to pages. More control and advertising opportunities for the local businesses and more direct, local real-time interaction from Facebook users.

This is going to be a very interesting space to watch the coming months.

Here is a write up I did on how Facebook Places will impact the Healthcare Industry:
