Google launches Display & Video 360 API v5 in public beta

Google released Display & Video 360 API v5 in public beta, introducing new targeting controls, Digital Out of Home support and changes to how advertisers manage audiences and inventory programmatically.

The update, announced on October 22nd, also moves Customer Match audience management to Google’s Data Manager API.

What’s new. Google has introduced several updates in API v5:

  • YouTube exclusions: Full management of advertiser-level YouTube video and channel exclusion targeting.
  • Digital Out of Home: Support for Digital Out of Home insertion order resources.
  • Inventory management: Updated inventory source retrieval and targeting capabilities.
  • Audience targeting: Refactored audience targeting for Demand Gen and YouTube ad groups.
  • Customer Match: Removal of Customer Match audience management features, with advertisers directed to Google’s Data Manager API instead.

How it works. The new API gives developers additional ways to manage Display & Video 360 campaigns through automated systems and third-party integrations. For example, advertisers can now manage YouTube video and channel exclusions at the advertiser level through the API, helping them maintain more consistent placement controls.

Digital Out of Home support also expands the API’s capabilities for managing advertising that appears on digital screens in physical locations.

Meanwhile, changes to inventory source retrieval and audience targeting will require developers to review how their existing integrations handle these resources.

The important change: Google is removing Customer Match audience management from Display & Video 360 API v5. Advertisers and developers using these capabilities will need to migrate their Customer Match workflows to the Data Manager API.

This separates audience data management from some of the campaign management functions handled by Display & Video 360.

Why we care. The update could improve how advertisers manage targeting, inventory and campaign operations across Display & Video 360.

More complete YouTube exclusion controls may help advertisers maintain brand suitability requirements, while Digital Out of Home support creates additional opportunities for automated campaign management.

However, businesses relying on custom API integrations should review the changes carefully to avoid disruptions to existing workflows.

Not final. Version 5 is currently in public beta, meaning Google may introduce breaking changes before its stable release. Developers should consult the release notes and migration guide before upgrading from v4.

Google also recommends updating client libraries to their latest versions before using the new features.

What developers should do. Teams using Display & Video 360 API should review the v5 documentation, identify affected integrations and plan their migration.

Particular attention should be given to Customer Match workflows, audience targeting configurations and inventory source management.

Because the API remains in beta, developers should also monitor Google’s release notes for changes that could affect their implementations.

The bottom line. Display & Video 360 API v5 introduces new YouTube targeting controls, Digital Out of Home support and updated audience management capabilities. Developers can begin testing the public beta now, but should prepare for migration requirements and potential breaking changes.
