Google Merchant Center adds API support for product reviews
Google added Merchant API support for product reviews, giving merchants another way to automatically upload and manage review data in Merchant Center.
What changed. Google’s updated Product Reviews help documentation now lists “Add product reviews using API” as an available submission method and directs merchants to the Merchant API for Product Reviews.
Previously, the documentation explicitly stated that API submissions weren’t supported.
The details. The API addition is part of a broader refresh to Google’s documentation and Product Ratings workflow.
Google has also updated the instructions to reflect the newer Merchant Center navigation. Merchants are now directed to Products & store > Reviews > Product reviews > Manage product review sources when adding or managing review data.
Catch up quick. Merchants still need to sign up for the Product Ratings program and have at least 50 product reviews before applying. The revised documentation now explicitly says a Google agent will review the application and enable the Merchant Center account for the program.
Why we care. The change makes it easier for merchants with large or frequently updated review datasets to automate submissions instead of relying on manual uploads, scheduled fetches or other file-based methods.
Also new. Google added guidance for products that are disapproved because of policy violations, including Healthcare and Medicine policies. Merchants are instructed to fix the underlying issue and then request a review for the affected products.
Google has also shifted some terminology from “feed submission” to “data source submission,” bringing the documentation in line with its newer Merchant Center language.
The big picture. API support removes another manual step from managing Product Ratings. For merchants and platforms handling review data at scale, it opens the door to more automated workflows for keeping review information flowing into Google.
