Today at SMX East, natural language search engine Hakia has launched a new search experience that enables searchers to view categorized results, as well as view “Trusted” Results” from “Credible Sites”. The Trusted Results program is an initiative Hakia has developed with information professionals and librarians. As they note on their site: A popular Web […]
Ask.com has released version 11 of their new search engine today. The new version somewhat goes back to the Ask Jeeves approach, focusing on providing structured search results, mostly in the form of answers. Techmeme has coverage of the news item, with the main articles currently from the NY Times and News.com.

With Microsoft’s current advertising campaign still leaving many people shaking their heads in wonder, TechCrunch has an idea: follow the lead of Ask.com. Jason Kincaid confesses that Ask’s ad — the one that shows a young woman “exercising” (ahem) on a stripper pole in her house — actually made him curious enough to click through […]
The adCenter blog announced that they have added a fourth ad to the top ad location in the Live Search results. This brings the number of search ads displayed on the page from 8 to 9, and pushes the organic search results down by one ad position. Here is a screen shot of what you […]
Today is Labor Day and I wanted to let you know that normal search news coverage will be mostly suspended for the day. In addition, I do want to point out the Labor Day logos from the various sites in our industry. As I noted this morning at the Search Engine Roundtable, neither Google, Yahoo […]

A few days ago, Ask.com relaunched Ask Kids, their search flavored for children. The Ask.com blog just wrote about the launch last night. Ask.com said the Ask Kids site was “built from the ground-up, with our own search technology.” It seems like Ask.com added a “very strict” list of which sites are allowed in the […]

We all know that Google dominates search market share in the United States, but Google really dominates in India. A recent comScore release says that Google search share in India is 81.4%, with over 1 billion searches conducted in June. Yahoo follows with 9.4 percent or 117 million searches, then Ask.com’s properties with 1.9 percent […]
Google Leads in Search Satisfaction from adAge.com reports that Google not only is leading in the University of Michigan and ForeSee Results in American Consumer Satisfaction Index, but is also “surging” in growth. Google scored an 86 in the index, up 10.3% in consumer satisfaction from last year. While Yahoo was down 2.5% to 77, […]
In this week’s Search In Pictures, here are the latest images culled from the web, showing what people eat at the search engine companies, how they play, who they meet, where they speak, what toys they have, and more.
Today is the day that the 2008 Summer Olympics kick off in Beijing. Here are the logos from Google, Yahoo and Ask.com for the special day:
Can any start-up search engine “be the next Google?” Many have wondered this, and today’s launch of Cuil (pronounced “cool”) may provide the best test case since Google itself overtook more established search engines. Cuil provides what appears to be a comprehensive index of the web, offers a unique display presentation, and emerges at a […]
There are ways in which Digg is like YouTube: it’s the “brand” in a competitive “social news” segment that also features Yahoo Buzz, AOL’s Propeller, MySpace News, Reddit, Ask Big News and, by some counts, more than 80 others. Similarly, YouTube was the “brand” in a crowded video segment when Google acquired the company. Digg […]
Earlier this month, I reported that Google Maps was testing walking directions on a small subset of users. This morning, I noticed that Google Maps now is offering walking directions for all Google Maps users. For example, conduct a search for 200 Madison Ave to 200 Lexington Ave and you will see the option to […]
It’s search popularity statistics time again, and I’m starting off with the latest figures from comScore. Finally, a change — Google slips while Yahoo and Microsoft gain. Trouble for the Big G? Not really — because in terms of raw number of searches, June 2008 was another record breaker for Google.

Ask announced that Photobucket has put its search box on the site. Photobucket is owned by MySpace parent News Corp., which has a search deal with Google. The Ask deal with Photobucket includes sponsored listings and other ads. Previously, web search on Photobucket was provided by Google.
Google Operating System reports that Google Maps is testing out walking directions in some locations. I was personally not able to replicate the walking directions, but Ionut has a screen capture as proof. We all know Ask.com had walking directions, but when Ask.com killed off their maps product, they also killed off the walking directions. […]
Google’s finally added a privacy link to its home page, explaining in 613 words why the company apparently can’t have more than 28 words on its home page. So important is this number that adding the privacy link was an issue that had to go up two Google’s co-founders. Please. On the same day that […]

The LiveSide Blog reported that Chris Pendleton,Virtual Earth Evangelist, posted the news that Ask.com has now dropped their own mapping product for Microsoft’s Virtual Earth. Virtual Earth can now be found on Ask Maps, Ask City, and within Ask’s search results as Smart Answers. It is a shame to see Ask.com dissolve the mapping service, […]

Back in March, after Ask.com seemed to be pulling away from search to some people, I wrote that Ask "killed the search engine," was no longer an innovator in search, and couldn’t expect to compete against Google. Recently, I spoke with Ask.com CEO Jim Safka, who hoped to change my mind. He failed to do […]

As SS Yahoo appears to be sinking, let me be the contrarian about her future. I admit, I find it as hard to believe as anyone that Yahoo has much life left in it after all the executive departures this week, plus the latest news of Delicious founder Joshua Schacter going. But since Yahoo’s leadership […]
Google recently came under fire for not providing a link to its privacy policy right from its home page, as Yahoo and Microsoft do. Ask.com, apparently hoping to ride the issue to some consumer gains, has emailed us that it now proudly sports a privacy link on its home page, along with some new privacy […]
The latest search engine share stats for May 2008 from Compete show Google hitting yet again another high. Let’s do the numbers, including the debate on whether Microsoft Live Search Club searches should be counted plus how everyone might start generating queries in new ways.
The LiveSide Blog reports that Live Search is testing out a new feature that allows users to customize the skin or background of the Live.com home page. The LiveSide Blog has a screen capture of one of the skins, a couple in a lake. If you look at the right-bottom corner of the page, you […]
Two big names have left Yahoo and Ask and speculation is that a third is to go. Below, more about he departures of Yahoo’s Jeremy Zawdony, Ask’s Peter Linsley, and Yahoo’s Jeffrey Weiner, who is rumored to be leaving soon.
Learning is a fundamental and highly adaptive function in human beings. More than any other species, humans are designed to be flexible learners and active agents in how we go about acquiring knowledge and skills. Yet much of what people learn happens without any formal instruction. Think about it. When we’re kids, we learn not […]
As the price of gasoline is speeds toward $5.00, it’s no surprise that tools helping consumers find less expensive gas are gaining visibility and popularity. Search Engine Journal and Google Maps Mania both have had nice roundups recently. Below, a look at some of the tools from them plus some additional ones and whether the […]
There’s a ton of search-related news and intrigue coming out of the Dow Jones “All Things D” conference in Southern California. Let’s start with the ridiculous remark from IAC’s chief Barry Diller that “Google is irrelevant to us.” That’s only true if Diller doesn’t care about search revenue. Google is essentially the source of that […]
Compete makes it a quadfecta! No real surprise, the latest search engine share stats out from Compete show Google has hit a new high — just as did previous stats out this month from Hitwise, Nielsen and comScore. Plus, an interesting look at how much search traffic Microsoft’s Live Search Club generates. NOTE: ON THE […]
As with recent search stats from Hitwise and Nielsen, comScore’s latest stats for April 2008 search engine share in the United States shows Google hitting a new high, breaking through the 60% mark for the first time with comScore’s measurements.
