Netscape has been reinvented several times since its acquisition by AOL in November 1998 — and all of these efforts have essentially failed. In addition to a browser, the Netscape brand had been associated with a portal and discount dial-up ISP (and still is) before Jason Calacanis turned the site into a Digg clone in […]
TechCrunch reported last night that travel meta-search site Kayak had closed a whopping $196 million round and then turned around and bought competitor SideStep for almost that same amount. The press release officially describes the transaction as a merger and both brands will apparently be preserved, but Kayak is clearly the dominant party and acquirer. […]
When Yahoo Local redesigned in August of this year, it largely eliminated the left column of detailed filters and refinement capabilities that were one of its best features, in my view. The statement from then Yahoo Local GM Jennifer Dulski (now CEO of Fatdoor) was that people weren’t really using them. What Yahoo did was […]
If you can believe it, the holidays are almost over. Turkey Day is now long gone, and in less than 2 weeks, the big man in the red suit will be making his way back to the North Pole. Wondering where the time went? Better yet, wondering how you’ll fare this holiday season? Well, you’re […]

Yahoo! has decided that their blogging and social networking platform, Yahoo! 360, is a failed experiment, and they’re pulling the plug. The news comes via Techcrunch, which noted that Jerry Yang announced it in a blog post on October 16. The Yahoo 360 blog explained the shut down in more detail. As Techcrunch points out, […]
TechCrunch first reported (confirmed on CEO Andy Sack’s blog) that local search site Judy’s Book is shutting down and/or looking for a buyer. After struggling to monetize its traffic, the site shifted its business model to emphasize coupons and local deals. The firm had raised over $10 million in two investment rounds. This follows the […]

comScore has released new figures looking at the most popular search engines worldwide. Google tops the list, with nearly five times as many searches as nearest competitor Yahoo. But the worldwide list does focus attention on some non-US based search players like Baidu and NHN, which owns Korea’s Naver. It also shows Asia-Pacific as the […]

Compete and Nielsen show Microsoft gaining search share over the summer, while comScore and Hitwise show the company losing share. Regardless of these numbers, however, Microsoft is confident that the search engine it’s reintroducing tonight in conjunction with its Searchification event will be a substantial improvement of the current version of Live search. Vanessa Fox […]
I’m sitting at the Microsoft conference center for Searchification Day. We’re within walking distance from the Googleplex, where I was for Google Searchology Day just a few short months ago. Searchology was all about Google’s unveiling of universal search, and interestingly, today could be seen as Live’s answer to that. As Nathan Buggia, Product Manager […]
Continuing on with this month’s search popularity stats review, I’m turning now to those from Nielsen NetRatings, after having looked at Hitwise stats yesterday. Like yesterday’s stats, those from NetRatings are from August 2007. They show Google on top, Yahoo fairly steady and Microsoft largely holding on to gains made in June.
Yes, it’s that time of the month again — search popularity stats time. Several ratings services are out with figures for August 2007, and I’m starting off with a look at those from Hitwise. They keep Google on top, Yahoo showing some gains and Microsoft continued drops.

The Yellow Pages Association put out a press release, supported by comScore data, that shows very healthy growth and usage of online yellow pages sites. Previously TMP Directional Marketing released findings from a consumer study that showed, among other things, that local search and yellow pages sites have some of the most qualified traffic on […]
AOL has moved its corporate headquarters to New York to be at the center of the U.S. ad and media universe and has introduced what it’s calling “Platform A,” an integrated ad buying platform and network that the company says has broader reach than any other today. Advertising.com and some of the more recent AOL […]
Often when people discuss local search they’re referring to finding restaurants or plumbers. But the concept of “local search” should include goods and product purchases as well. Whenever I discuss products and retail as part of the definition of local search people are often a little skeptical. Yet again and again studies show that consumers […]
Recently Superpages has been putting out a press release a day, and today is no exception. The company just announced that it would be buying the directory assets of Infospace — the only one explicitly named is Switchboard.com — for $225 million (mixture of cash and debt). Infospace.com itself is a directory site and so […]
Yahoo is buying news aggregator BuzzTracker (Kara Swisher reports for $5 million). Yahoo sees the acquisition improving and expanding its news coverage in a number of ways. BuzzTracker founder Alan Warms becomes GM of Yahoo News.

The analytics firm comScore is expanding its core search metrics product, qSearch, in a number of ways that the company says will make the measurement of search volumes and market share more accurate than it was previously. According to James Lamberti, SVP Search and Media at comScore, the expansion of the company’s methodology and measurement […]
The International Herald Tribune reports (story also in the NY Times) on new developments at both Google and Microsoft concerning their health product strategies. The long-rumored Google Health is apparently almost here. (See screenshots at Google Blogoscoped.) Health care-related advertising and marketing is a multi-billion dollar industry in the U.S. and Google and Microsoft are […]

Just two days after Yahoo released research that showed how the Internet is driving offline retail transactions in increasing numbers, ad agency TMP Directional Media conducted an online survey with comScore that showed a parallel phenomenon in the service sector. The survey, which had 3,000 respondents, sought to capture consumer attitudes and behavior toward traditional […]

Earlier this week, Yahoo released the results of a major study of online advertising and consumer retail purchase behavior. Conducted in conjunction with comScore between April, 2006 and January, 2007, the study sought to quantify “the impact of search marketing and display advertising on consumer shopping behavior and the in-store sales of major retailers.” It […]

That rise in Microsoft’s search share that Compete reported last week? Now the latest figures from comScore report the same — that Microsoft’s Live Search Club significantly increased traffic to Windows Live Search. First the numbers, which shows the percentage of searches in the United States handled by each major search network for June 2007, […]
Answers Corp has reached an agreement to buy Dictionary.com, Thesaurus.com and Reference.com from Lexico Publishing Group, LLC for $100 million. These properties attracted 11.5 million unique monthly users in the U.S. during the month of June 2007 according to comScore. They generated revenues of $7 million, EBITDA of $2.9 million and net income of $2.8 […]
Earlier this week, Microsoft got some positive news about its search share growing thanks to a Live Search Club program it started in May. But then came the criticisms. Was the traffic just off people using robots to win prizes? Nope, says Microsoft. I had a short talk with the new general manager of Window […]
LeeAnn Prescott of Hitwise posted data showing that Flickr has surged to the number two photo site spot, controlling over 6% of the market share in the US. Photobucket still leads the pack with a comfortable 43.5% share. But in the past four weeks, Flickr’s traffic grew 38%.
Compete is out with its latest search marketshare report for June 2007, showing that MSN/Windows Live Search has posted a dramatic rise since last month. This appears to be do to the Live Search Club promotion that’s going on. Below, a look at the trend, a history of how giveaways for search have and haven’t […]
