If you’re a general search engine that competes with Google (Yahoo & Microsoft), as you know, it’s very hard to make headway in that game. But if you recharacterize or reposition yourself as other than a “search engine” you might gain some adoption. To some degree that’s what Kosmix did by building out multi-media rich […]

After Yahoo-Microsoft madness, there’s been a bit of a lull so I’m cleaning out my inbox and wanted to mention a few items that might be of interest. Below, a way to quickly search blogs & social media sites all at once, a new video search tool, a study into automatic search queries, an awesome […]

As promised, now that a full calendar year has gone by, it’s time to look at some key stats about how Search Engine Land has grown in various ways over the year. Let’s dive in!
Finally, Barry and I can share an application that we’ve been cooking up — Search News For Facebook. Install this, and by default you’ll get the top headlines from Search Engine Land and Search Engine Roundtable combined, showing on your Facebook profile page. You can also add your own feed or any feeds you like […]
A much discussed blog posting this morning comes from Saul Hansell at the New York Times, who spoke to both Google and Yahoo about their plans to turn their email products into social networks, in a manner of speaking: “Inbox 2.0.” The plans discussed in the post suggest some clever and creative thinking about how […]
We’ve had a huge blogroll on Search Engine Land since we started last year. Inspired by some recent posts, I’ve now organized that massive list into categories, to make it easier for those looking to find some good blog reading. Below, a guide to our blogroll, designed to help those who want to seek out […]

As part of adding our new "Lands" tabs to Search Engine Land last month, I cleaned up our feed page that helps people understand how to add our feeds to various feed readers. The biggest challenge was dealing with the inconsistent sizes of feed buttons from the different providers. I wanted to share how we […]
Video search engine Truveo, acquired by AOL in late 2005, announced that it now has a user base of almost 40 million monthly uniques (per comScore). This is not at Truveo.com but across a diverse network of partner sites, which it powers. The company also said that since late last year it has seen 50 […]

Yesterday was “Google Personalization Day” for me and a number of others who attended a meeting at Google with Marissa Mayer, VP of Search Products & User Experience, as well as Google Personalization Technical Lead Sep Kamvar and iGoogle Product Manager Jessica Ewing. Barry has captured much of the factual information coming out of the […]

There’s a flurry of activity in the newly invigorated personalized homepage category. Within the past two weeks all the major competitors have made announcements. First, AOL launched MyNetscape, followed by the release of “universal video widgets” on Pageflakes. Then the new MyYahoo launched. Yesterday Netvibes unveiled “Coriander,” its next product release with new content modules. […]
Read/WriteWeb has a good overview of the just yesterday relaunched (ahead of schedule) new, more ajaxified MyYahoo. There are a number of improvements and upgrades: * Pre-built personalized pages * Category pages for topics and “content suggestions” * Further customization of their page with drag-and-drop modules * Feed previews and a full post reader on […]
PC World reports that My Yahoo will be launching an updated version within a few weeks. The reports do not specify exactly what we will see from the upgrade, but I am suspecting we may just see an enhanced RSS reader built into the portal.
Below are Search Engine Land’s 10 most popular stories from February 2007:
FeedBurner’s View of the Feed Market at FeedBurner’s blog gives us a detailed look at the numbers and statistics behind your feeds. With the recent adoption of Google Reader subscriber numbers, many bloggers have seen their “subscribers” and other feed stats spike up. In fact, we learn from FeedBurner’s post that overall; publishers noticed an […]

This subject is worthy of perhaps a 10,000 word New Yorker article. But this will just be a relatively short post based on some thinking following a meeting with Netvibes CEO Tariq Krim in San Francisco the other day.
Time for the second monthly update on how Search Engine Land is growing. As I said with my review of December 2006 traffic, I hope our traffic statistics will be both interesting and also provide helpful tips to other search marketers. This review especially covers social media sites as a driver of traffic. It also […]
Wikio is a relatively new startup that blends articles from major news web sites and blogs with commentary and tags from Wikio users. It also offers powerful search and customization options that go beyond what you find at most other “media harvesting” sites on the web. Google News offers personalization, but doesn’t let you choose […]
Ex-Yahoo Exec now Pageflakes CEO by Om Malik reports that Dan Cohen, who was the Head of My Yahoo business unit, left Yahoo to become the CEO of Pageflakes. Gary Price recently reviewed Pageflakes, describing it as an easy and free way to “build a dynamic personalized home/start page.” It is a lot like Google […]
I’ve been trained from internet birth that site stats are a precious thing, never to be shared. Well, not trained, but somehow I got it in my head. It’s somewhat silly, given that any site that carries advertising often reveals this information in their media kit anyway. With Search Engine Land being all new, a […]
