In perhaps his first public speech since talking the helm at Yahoo, CEO Jerry Yang will deliver the opening keynote at the upcoming RightMedia Open in Half Moon Bay, CA October 22 – 24. Yang will speak on the morning of October 23. And John Battelle will moderate what will be the other newsworthy session of the event, a conversation among three major “exchange” competitors: DoubleClick’s CEO David Rosenblatt, DRIVEpm’s president Scott Howe, and Yahoo!/Right Media’s founder and CEO, Michael Walrath.

These companies are of course surrogates for Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo — assuming the Google DoubleClick acquisition is approved. Technically, DRIVEpm is a network, but Microsoft also owns online exchange AdECN.

Yahoo has been barreling along with acquisitions (BlueLitium, Zimbra, etc) and there there is hearsay evidence that Yahoo has reentered talks to invest in Facebook. Yang faces many skeptics on the question of whether he will be able to get Yahoo back on track.

Yang’s keynote will be after the Q3 earnings report on October 16. If the news is good, the pressure will be less. But the speech assumes even greater significance if results are flat.
