Marin Software Adds Support For Google Shopping Campaigns

Marin Software Supports Google Shopping Campaigns Marin Software has added support for Google Shopping Campaigns, which will become the only way to manage Product Listing Ads (PLAs) in AdWords beginning in late August. The dynamic campaigns tool in the Marin platform automates Shopping Campaign creation and optimization. Advertisers can automate bid strategies, based a number of targets such as product-specific revenue or customer lifetime value, for example. “Support of Google Shopping Campaigns combined with our cross-channel targeting capabilities allows retailers to take their product-based advertising to new heights,” said [...]

Reassess How You Prioritize Your E-Commerce PPC Campaign Builds

ppc-paid-search-mobile-600 Over the last couple of years, the prioritization of e-commerce PPC campaign builds has shifted dramatically. With the rise of Google Shopping and with dynamic solutions now available to advertisers, standard Search Network text-ad campaign builds fall down the priority list. In today's world of e-commerce PPC, I prioritize my campaigns as follows: Google Shopping (Product Listing Ads or PLAs) Remarketing (All Types) Search Network Text Ads & Ad Extensions Dynamic Search Ads (DSAs) Google Display Network Google Shopping According to RKG's Q1 2014 Digital Marketing Report, PL [...]

New Google AdWords PLA Test Groups Products By Price

Google AdWords PLAs pricing groups This could get interesting. Last month, we saw Google running a test that ranked product listing ads (PLAs) by ratings and reviews in search results. Now, a new test groups and ranks products by price. In the screenshot below, provided by CPC Strategy, PLAs are grouped in two pricing stacks -- one  for "Up to $30" and a second for "Over $30." The products in the first group are shown in order by price. Oddly, there is one outlier in the second group -- the $36.95 sandal from Nordstrom is listed after two higher priced shoes from Keen. This test could obviously have a big impact on prici [...]

Google’s New AdWords Editor Version Offers Shopping Campaigns Support, More Display Targeting Options

adwords-editor-icon Roughly a month ahead of the rollover to Shopping Campaigns, Google has released a new version of AdWords Editor that supports the new campaign type. Google announced the old style of PLA campaigns will be shut down at some point in late August. Note that support is limited to editing Shopping Campaigns that are already set up, so you'll still need to create your new campaigns and product groups via the AdWords web interface. Other updates for display advertisers include support for more audience targeting. Interest categories and in-market audiences are now available from the "Assign Au [...]

The 10 Most Important Paid Search Developments So Far In 2014

money-mouse-ppc-600 It's been a big year so far for product listing ads on both Google and Bing. Google started putting more ads in the Knowledge Graph. Bing followed Google's lead on combining tablet and desktop traffic. And Google said it would begin stripping paid search queries from referrer strings. Now that we're halfway through the year, let's step back and look at what's happened so far in paid search. These were the 10 biggest announcements and changes to come from Bing Ads and Google AdWords in the first half of 2014. Bing Ads There were three announcements made by Bing Ads in the first hal [...]

3 Opportunities With Those New Google Shopping Campaigns

(Click to enlarge.) For those who are not necessarily familiar with Google Shopping campaigns -- let's clarify things straight away. Product listing ads (PLAs) are remaining the same as an ad format for end users, whether search marketers are using "old PLAs" or new Shopping campaigns. The novelty lies only on the campaign management side of things, including a layering system based of the Google Merchant Center feed directly in AdWords. But in my mind, some of the new Google Shopping features should have a significant impact for both advertisers and end users – here are a couple of initial thoughts. 1. [...]

Google Issues Best Practices For Shopping Campaigns Ahead Of This Summer’s Big Transition

google-shopping-600 With Shopping Campaigns becoming the default campaign type for running Product Listing Ads on Google by the end of August, the search giant has issued a best practices whitepaper to help marketers make the transition. The main points the paper dives into are product feed optimization and updates, Shopping campaign structure, bidding and mobile recommendations. Much of the best practices haven't necessarily changed from the original PLA recommendations -- use relevant titles and high-quality images -- but there are good baseline reminders such as limiting title length to 50 characters to [...]

Google Shopping Logo If you're running Google Product Listing Ads, it's time to revisit your feed. Google has updated the feed requirements for Google Shopping with several new attributes as well as some changes to existing content requirements. A new 'mobile link' attribute has been added to ensure users are taken to mobile landing pages from their smartphones. Advertisers can now enter a separate mobile landing page URL via this attribute. Additional updates included: Merchant-defined custom bundles, such as a camera with additional case and lens, must now be identified as such in order to be displayed [...]

Optmyzr Launches Bid Management Solution For Google Shopping Campaigns

black-shoes-google-shopping Google's new Shopping Campaigns offer many benefits over traditional PLA campaigns, including granular performance benchmarks, but bid optimization can still be cumbersome. Optmyzr, the company that provides automation tools for Google AdWords management, has launched a new tool to help streamline and speed-up bid management on Google Shopping Campaigns. Shopping Bidder is designed particularly for companies managing large Shopping Campaigns with thousands of products. The tool gives paid search managers a view of all biddable items in their accounts on a single page. Filters then allow [...]

How To Manage Bids For AdWords Shopping Ads

google-shopping-600 Last month, I covered the basics of how Shopping campaigns in AdWords differ from Search campaigns. The key finding I had was that, with Search, you have to add keywords to target more queries. In Shopping, all queries that match your products are targeted by default, and one of the main reasons to divide products into Product Groups is to get more control over bids. This month, I'd like to share what I've learned about managing bids for AdWords Shopping ads. Bidding In Shopping Campaigns All bidding in Shopping Campaigns is done at the lowest Product Group level -- so while ad grou [...]

Google Introduces New Content API For Google Shopping

google-shopping-600 Today, Google introduced a new version of the API that allows retailers to manage product feed content programmatically, as opposed to through manual updates to Google Merchant Center. It's the first version update of the API since Google first launched it in 2010, before Google Shopping became a paid platform. Version 2 of the Content API for Google Shopping offers these added features: Item-level data quality information: See if an item was disapproved because a landing page URL isn’t working on a mobile device or if unique product identifiers are inaccurate. Faster pricing and av [...]

Study Finds Sweeping KPI Improvements With Switch To Google Shopping Campaigns

google-shopping-600 The August deadline for converting your Google product listing campaigns (PLA) to the new Shopping Campaigns structure -- before Google does it for you -- is just a few months away. A new study from CPC Strategy suggests it's worth making the switch sooner rather than later. CPC Strategy expected to see management efficiencies, but the team was surprised to see key metrics improve by simply making the move to Shopping Campaigns. Average revenue, orders and ROAS all increased without making additional feed optimization efforts after the switch. Average orders ticked up just over 4 per [...]

Starting A Shopping Campaign In AdWords? Forget All You Know About Keywords!

Shopping Ads Displace Search Ads Now that Shopping Ads and Product Listing Ads (PLAs) are getting more prominent positions on the SERPs (and taking away traffic from search ads); I've started to focus on them more with my clients. I found that working with Google Shopping campaigns is a good deal different from working with traditional keywords and text ads; so over the coming weeks, I'd like to share some of my experiences with this new type of AdWords campaign. The key initial learning for me is that product groups are so different from keywords that you really need to understand how they function before setting up yo [...]

New PLA Test Spotted: Google Ranking Products By Reviews And Ratings

rankings-plas-cpcstrategy The team at CPC Strategy spotted a new test in the Google Product Listing Ads (PLAs) last night. In a search for coffee grinders that was qualified with "best", the PLAs were shown in order of a  numerical rankings system that appears to be factoring in the quality and quantity of each item's ratings. In the screenshot above, notice that #2 ranked Cuisinart Supreme has by far the most reviews at 312, but with a rating of 4 stars it loses out to 5-star rated Capresso Infinity which has 169 reviews. However, the Cuisinart Supreme is still able to outrank three items with 4.5 stars (De Longhi [...]

Google Injects Google Shopping With Amazon Talent In Rangespan Acquisition

Rangespan acquired by Google Google's ongoing efforts to bolster its product search portal, Google Shopping, and take on Amazon and Ebay has got another boost. The company has acquired Rangespan, a London based start-up that developed backend supply chain management software for online retailers. Founded by Amazon veterans, Rangespan's predictive software helps surface products that are likely to be hits based on real-time analytics as well as simplify inventory and order management. A Google spokesperson confirmed the deal and said the team will be joining Google Shopping to improve services for shoppers and retail [...]

Google Tests Showing Product Ads In Knowledge Graph Carousel Area

test-experiment-trail-600 About a year ago, Google launched the carousel interface to better distribute content from their Knowledge Graph. Well, now, Google is apparently testing showing ads from the paid Google Shopping results in that user interface. Pete Meyers posted on the Moz Google+ page an image of him seeing Google Shopping listings in the carousel for a search on [laptops]. Here is a picture from Pete Meyers of Moz: Pete said that you should notice that "almost everything above the fold is a paid result." Indeed. Google has experimented with showing product listing ads in the knowledge graph [...]

RKG: Q1 US Paid Search Up 17 Percent, Fueled By PLAs; Smartphones Drove Just 7 Percent Of Spend

RKG Paid Search Spend US Q1 2014 RKG is out with its first quarter Digital Marketing Report today, showing US paid search spend increased 17 percent year-over-year. This echoes positive Q1 global growth trends reported by Covario (25 percent) and IgnitionOne (8 percent). Mobile devices and product listing ads (PLAs) both drove growth. Paid search spend growth slowed slightly after the holiday-fueled Q4, which saw 19 percent year-over-year growth. Clicks rose 11 percent, while CPCs were up 6 percent compared to the previous year. Google's growth trends reflect those of the overall market, with year-over-year growth slowi [...]

Google Adds Shopping Campaigns Features, Says Regular PLA Campaigns To Sunset In August 2014

google-shopping-products-featured Google introduced Shopping campaigns to all advertisers running Product Listing Ads (PLAs) in February as a way to simplify PLA set up and management. Today, Google announced some new features that have been rolling out in response to advertiser feedback, and they laid out the succession plan for Shopping campaigns to take over legacy PLA campaigns. Probably the most requested change is the addition of multiple ad groups. When Shopping campaigns debuted, campaigns consisted of just one ad group, which many advertisers found limiting. Retailers can now set up multiple ad groups within a Shoppi [...]

Google Testing New Sponsored Shopping Boxes, With 3D View

google-shopping-panel-nest-cropped Google continues to experiment with Google Shopping displays beyond the traditional thumbnail box panel of Product Listing Ads. This latest version is larger than the sponsored result spotted earlier this month for the book "Don't Make Me Think". Found by Twitter user Britney Muller of Pryde Marketing, the sponsored result for "Nest thermostats" -- now owned by Google -- incorporates Google Shopping's 3D product view. The result presents information from Google Shopping including a list of merchants with prices, product details and reviews all in one box in the search result. Clickin [...]

Google Stepping Up Merchant Feed Enforcement

google-police-600 Got some slop in your Google product feed? Now's the time to revisit all those pesky identifiers and tidy things up. Google is upping its enforcement of product feeds in Google Merchant Center again. Google began this process last year by disapproving products without unique product identifiers such as GTIN (which also must be conform to standard specifications), MPN and brand and demoting products with incorrect usage of the identifier_exists attribute. The identifier_exists attribute was added last year for merchants selling custom goods that don't have unique identifiers like brand na [...]
