Live Blogging The Google I/O 2011 Day 1 Keynote

Are you ready! We’ve got Google Music coming! Maybe. Certainly some Android or Chrome announcements to come, here at the first day of the Google I/O developers conference. The keynote begins at 9am PT. So does my live blogging. Seriously, there is some expectation that Google Music 3.0, a cloud-based music system, will get aired […]

Nexus One: What Exactly Happened Yesterday In Mountain View?

The 1950s classic Japanese film Rashômon by Akira Kurosawa is an exploration of human perception, truth and how there can be widely differing accounts of the same event. The film’s plot revolves around the rape of a woman and murder of her husband and is told through dramatically differing accounts of four witnesses. The stories […]

Putting The Google Phone (Nexus One) Into Some Perspective

As everyone knows by now the weekend saw an explosion of interest, speculation and posting around the “Nexus One,” the so-called “Google Phone” predicted first in an article by TheStreet in October and then further exposed by TechCrunch. I wrote two posts this weekend as the story evolved:

Google’s Home Page Promotes Motorola / Verizon Droid Phone

Google really wants you to buy a Motorola Droid, the hot new phone that just hit stores today. In fact, Google is so enamored that it’s advertising the Droid on its homepage: “The Droid is on sale now. Learn more.” Clicking the “learn more” link leads to this “mobile partners” page that touts the Google […]

Did Google Cleverly Upstage Microsoft’s Bing?

Mike Arrington thinks that Google engaged in “a little stealth black ops mission” and blunted the full impact of the Ballmer Bing announcement yesterday by announcing Wave. Whether Wave represents a huge new development in digital communications remains to be seen, but almost every major news outlet had to cover it and divide its attention […]

Android Paid Apps Launch: “It’s Business Time”

People have been expecting the paid Android apps market for months and it’s finally, officially here. What this means is that developers can start charging for their apps and consumers will start gaining access to and paying for selected apps on Android phones (which now is only the G1). The Apple iPhone paid apps market […]

Privacy Critics Don’t Give Google Enough ‘Latitude’

Since it launched a couple days ago there have been several predictable responses from persistent Google critics who regard the new location-aware Latitude service on Google Maps as a threat to privacy. The phrases “tracking,” “stalking” and “Big Brother” popped up in a range of articles in mainstream news outlets. Those stories were quickly written […]

Google Android Phone Finds Its Voice (Search That Is)

Google is rolling out voice search on the Android platform via the new software update happening this week. That’s also supposed to add a virtual keyboard apparently. The G1 has only a physical keyboard. CNET points out that the central difference between the iPhone version of voice search and Android’s is the inability to simply […]

Kogan ‘Indefinitely’ Delays Android Phone Launch

Austrialian electronics maker Kogan Technologies has said it is “indefinitely” delaying what was an imminent launch of the second Android phone in Australia, because of technology compatibility issues. According to the Kogan Blog: The Agora did reach a very late stage of development. Manufacturing had commenced and it was a matter of days from being […]

Google Maps For Mobile Simplifies Directions

According to the Google Mobile Blog, Google Maps has simplified getting directions on your BlackBerry, Nokia, G1 or iPhone — if you have the Maps client downloaded. Previously if users entered a business name on the Maps client as a directions end point, Google might not recognize it. According to the post: Until today, if […]

Google AdWords Adds New Mobile Targeting Options

Google has announced new mobile advertising options to target the iPhone, G1, and other mobile devices with full HTML web browsers. Advertisers can now create separate campaigns that are targeted specifically toward mobile searchers with smart phones. You can write mobile-specific ads and get performance data separate from your other AdWords campaigns.

G1 Arrives, So Does Android Market

This morning the Android Market formally launched, coinciding with the arrival of the T-Mobile G1, the first Android phone. There’s a showcase that features a sampling of the more than 50 existing apps, with many more to come. All the apps are currently free, with paid apps to come in the first quarter of 2009.

Google’s iPhone Ad Units, G1 Pre-Sells 1.5 Million?

On Friday, AdWeek reported that Google was creating and testing specialized ad units for full HTML mobile browsers, such as Safari on the iPhone. The idea is that the iPhone’s Safari browser (or Android, Skyfire, Opera) would be detected and alternative ads, and landing pages or iPhone optimized sites, would be substituted for conventional mobile […]

First Android Phone: “T-Mobile G1 With Google”

If the video shown during the press conference is any indication, T-Mobile’s “G1 with Google” should give the iPhone a run for its money. Much was made during the press conference of the “totally open” platform (vs. Apple), though Apple wasn’t mentioned by any of the presenters. Here’s the press release.

On Android Eve, Co-Founder Andy Rubin Predicts The Future Of Mobile

Tomorrow is widely anticipated to be the day when T-Mobile announces availability of the first Android phone. The phone is reportedly an HTC “Dream,” which will apparently sell for $199 with a two year contract. Many believe the handset will resemble a Sidekick. It’s fitting in a way that a Sidekick-like device should be the […]
