5 Questions For Bing Principal Design Manager Michael Kroll
Last week, Bing refreshed its Android app. Today, Bing announced an upgrade of its app for the iPad. The primary driver of the redesign was iOS 7 and the aesthetics of the new Bing app are intended to match the new Apple OS. One of the most promoted new features, as on the Android app, […]
Microsoft’s Bing and Google are pursuing very similar strategies with their mobile apps. Google’s search app for iOS is essentially a browser and gateway to other Google apps and services. The same is true for Bing on iOS and Android. Earlier this week Bing refreshed its Android app to make its UI and design consistent […]
Below is what happened in search today, as reported on Search Engine Land and from other places across the Web. From Search Engine Land: US Search Awards Names Search Engine Land Best Blog Of 2013 Last night, Search Engine Land had the honor of being named Best Blog of 2013 by the US Search Awards […]
Last week, Microsoft issued a second announcement that it would be transitioning Bing Ads account logins to Microsoft accounts — currently used to access Hotmail, Messenger, SkyDrive, Windows Phone, Xbox LIVE, or Outlook.com services. Today, some users who clicked “Remind me later” and opted to login with their existing credentials got “Login Fail Error” notices […]
Bing Ads users may start seeing a new screen at login asking them to sign in with a Microsoft account, in much the same way AdWords users are required to have a Google account. Once you make the switch, you’ll need to use your Microsoft account name and password to access Bing Ads and Bing […]
Microsoft is pushing its new Bing Smart Search feature, which will hit the streets tomorrow when the company releases Windows 8.1. Bing Smart Search is a feature in the new OS that simultaneously searches the web, the cloud (Microsoft SkyDrive), your PC and — if you’re using a mobile device — your device and the […]
I was reminded by CNET that it was exactly a year ago when Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer made his bold, unsolicited bid for Yahoo. It seems like a lifetime ago, certainly for the economy it is. CNET’s Stephen Shankland speculates about what might have been if the offer had been accepted by Yahoo rather than […]
There’s new buzz and speculation about the status of Google’s unconfirmed online file storage service, informally dubbed “GDrive.” Garrett Rogers points to a CNET interview with Gmail Product Manager Todd Jackson, who’s quoted saying: “We know people’s file sizes are getting bigger. They want to share their files, keep them in the cloud, and not […]
Microsoft Live Search Cashback launched with great expectation in some quarters that it would grow Microsoft’s search share dramatically. That, so far, has failed to happen. But Microsoft says it is making progress toward its own more realistic goal of growing commercial search traffic over the long term, highlighting some new figures it says show […]
Microsoft today released version 2.0 of its Live Search API, also called “Silk Road,” that offers support for multiple data exchange protocols, access to more search resources and the ability for developers to pull in ads to help monetize search applications they build.
Extending a partnership that dates back to 2006, Facebook today added Microsoft’s Live Search to its offerings, giving users in the U.S. a way to search the web without leaving Facebook.com. An announcement on the Live Search Blog also says Microsoft adCenter will display paid search ads next to those web search results. Microsoft has […]
The latest search engine share stats for May 2008 from Compete show Google hitting yet again another high. Let’s do the numbers, including the debate on whether Microsoft Live Search Club searches should be counted plus how everyone might start generating queries in new ways.
I’ve got no problem if Microsoft wants to “bribe” searchers to use its search engine. Even Google has done the same. But the Live Search Cashback program rolled out today seems a pretty inept way to do it, far more likely to disappoint and frustrate than woo searchers.
Two weeks ago, I attended a Microsoft event in London to talk about its progress in search. One of the highlights were these fake, hokey TV ads they showed us in between breaks. I loved them. They’re especially funny if you know Britain, but anyone should get a chuckle out of them. Videos are below, […]
I’m in London today for Live Search’s Executive Symposium, designed to educate key thought leaders, company executives, and others about what Microsoft is doing in search and what’s happing in search generally. I’ve twittered the morning sessions, which were interesting and full of stats. Below, the raw twitters. If time allows, I might clean this […]
Each month, I compile Search Month — a recap of all the stories that have happened relating to search, categorized by topic. I thought it would be fun to take all the Search Months over the past year and produce this edition of Search Year 2007. It was far more work than I imagined, but […]
Late last month, at its “Searchification” event, Microsoft introduced a wide range of search enhancements and improvements. The company also said there would be additional updates to follow. Those are now rolling out and include feature and content enhancements for maps, local, and mobile services. The biggest news is the introduction of a new voice […]
If I ever had to build a search engine, or more precisely, the interface of a search engine, this would be the team I would want to bring together. When I came up with the idea of looking forward three years and speculating on what the search results page may look like in 2010, these […]
The Google Blog announced they are allowing users to pay for additional storage for Gmail and Picasa. Currently Google gives you 1GB of free space for Picasa and 2.8GB of free space for Gmail. You can now buy additional space, and Google hopes to expand this service to their other services, such as Google Docs […]
Below is what happened in search today, as reported on Search Engine Land and from other places across the web:
It’s hard to believe, but it’s already been more than a year since Microsoft Live Search launched. At the time, I remember being impressed with the functionality of the product, and thinking to myself, “this ought to heat up the game some—it’ll be interesting to see how the competition responds.” Well now that Live Search […]
