Google tests pushing searchers from AI Overviews with follow up questions to AI Mode
This brings AI Mode more directly into Google Search and sadly, will likely result in fewer clicks to websites.
Google is now testing a push from AI Overviews into the AI Mode interface. When you click “Show more” on certain AI Overviews, Google may take you straight into AI Mode. And as you scroll through the AI Overview, you can ask follow-up questions directly with AI Mode.
What Google said. Google’s Robby Stein announced this on X:
- “Today we’re starting to test a new way to seamlessly go deeper in AI Mode directly from the Search results page on mobile, globally.”
Here’s a video of this in action, with Stein’s full message:
Previous testing. Google tested this in October and several times since. Now that Google is officially announcing the test, there’s a higher chance the feature will fully roll out.
The issue. This will likely mean even fewer clicks from AI Overviews to publishers and websites. The large “Show more” button won’t load more sources and details – it will take searchers to a detailed, AI-generated answer, which makes clicks to your site even less likely.

Why we care. Be aware of this test and its potential impact on your Google Search traffic. It doesn’t look promising for driving visitors to your site – or to websites in general.
