Search As Television’s Savior?

Nielsen Research came out with interesting statistics on overall video consumption last week indicating that total TV consumption reached record levels when considering traditional broadcast video, time shifted video, web video and mobile video. This seems to fly in the face of the predictions that online video is cannibalizing the traditional business model. The web […]

Cuil Announces New Layout, Other Updates

Cuil, the search engine that launched to great hype last year and seems to have disappeared since then, announced changes to its design, content, and backend today. When Cuil launched last summer, the site’s design was one of its primary distinguishing features — it used a three-column layout that gave equal weight to a variety […]

YouTube Gets Full-Length TV Shows, Click-To-Buy Options

YouTube has experimented with long-form content in the past. However, the site is now rolling out full-length episodes of vintage TV shows like Star Trek, MacGyver, and the not-so-vintage Beverly Hills 90210. Users can also watch these in the recently introduced “theater view,” featuring an expanded player that looks similar to the Hulu player.

VideoSurf: New, Genuinely Radical Video Search

I’m generally not given to hyperbole or breathless enthusiasm when writing about a new search service. Hulu, trying to drive more video streams and ad views, has embedded a search box in the upper right of its syndicated video player, according to the Hulu blog. Search results appear on screen and, when clicked, initiate a new video stream in the player. Ads generally appear before the next video.

Just in case you hadn’t gotten enough news and speculation about the various potential deals surrounding MicroHoo, AOL, and News Corp. there are a flurry of articles (as one might expect) today about all this. The most interesting is probably the one in the Wall Street Journal that interviews ad executives about their thoughts regarding […]

TV Is Dead: Long Live Distributed Video

Almost since its mainstream introduction in the 1940s and 1950s, television has been the dominant mass medium. Today, television ad revenues in the US are estimated to be between $60 and $70 billion. But the internet, like cable TV and DVRs before it, is shaking up the industry and fundamentally changing consumer behavior. There are […]

AOL Offers Video Ticker Ads

AOL is introducing a new video advertising format: ticker ads. It’s the latest video site to move away from pre-roll, which the Online Publishers Association suggests is a good model but otherwise is roundly rejected by users as delivering a bad experience.
