A very long time ago Google was trying to find alternatives to pre-roll to monetize YouTube videos. Google-sponsored consumer research in 2007 found that users don’t like pre-roll. But that’s ancient history. Today Google is trying to find more ways to generate and capture display and video ad revenue, which it views as a massive […]
Impressive numbers related to video viewing and ad impressions today: According to the latest comScore statistics, YouTube passed the two billion session threshold in October and Hulu showed more than a billion video ads. For the month, YouTube (“Google sites” below) saw an increase in both unique viewers and in viewing sessions. It’s the first […]
The Wall Street Journal reports on new ad formats being developed by Google (and others) that would “outperform” or are intended to succeed traditional online ad formats. The truth of most forecasts lies not in their numeric precision but in their direction and trajectory. For years consumer time with the internet has not brought commensurate ad dollars to the medium. The recession, grudging recognition of consumer behavior and years of evangelizing finally appears to be changing all that. Metrics aggregator eMarketer is […]
Recession? Economic slowdown? Financial gloom-and-doom? Not online, and not as far as Internet advertising is concerned. The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) says that U.S. online ad revenue hit an all-time high of $6.3 billion in Q4 of 2009, a 2.6% increase over the fourth quarter of 2008 and a 14% increase over Q3 of 2009. The holiday season is well on its way in the U.S. with our biggest feast, Thanksgiving, and largest shopping day of the year, Black Friday, behind us. Now, it’s more crucial than ever for advertisers to work like Santa’s elves to ensure their products and/or services land on everyone’s list. As both an online consumer […]
Expectations were high for Google’s Q3 given some of the positive reports coming out about clicks and search volumes from third parties such as Efficient Frontier and comScore. I’ve been writing monthly articles for Small is Beautiful for about almost a year now, offering observations and insights into what we’ve seen working with small and medium sized businesses from the front lines but will be winding down a bit in 2009. YouTube is formally announcing “sponsored videos.” This is an evolution and expansion of what was has been informally running under the heading “promoted videos.” The effort seeks to marry Google AdWords-like bidding and targeting with YouTube video content. Like many of you, I’ve attended lots of industry shows and events during the past several months related to search and directional marketing. What is especially amazing to me is how frequently I am asked about the ‘secret sauce’ behind optimizing online videos for search success, especially with regard to organic search. Truth is, we’ve […]
