A Revamped Delicious Increases Imagery & Adds “Stacks”

Back in May, the social bookmarking site Delicious was purchased from Yahoo! by AVOS (a company led by the founders of YouTube) and innovative features were promised for the community. Yesterday, the newest version of Delicious launched, with quite a new look: The new look Delicious features many enhancements, including stacked bookmarks (called "stacks") and a much more visually rich appearance for users. Introduction Of "Stacks" The biggest change released is the stacks functionality that allows users to group links into easy to consume "stacks." Previously, tagging was the only for [...]

YouTube Founders Buy Delicious; First Step To Taking On Google?

Delicious, the popular social bookmarking site that Yahoo wanted to get rid of, has been acquired by the founders of YouTube, Chad Hurley and Steve Chen. Could it be a first step for the duo to jump into the search space? From the press release put out by AVOS, the company run by the duo (note, you might not get to the release, as the AVOS site appears to have crashed): Delicious will become part of AVOS, a new Internet company.... Going back to their roots, Hurley and Chen located Delicious in downtown San Mateo, California, blocks away from where they started YouTube. They’re aggr [...]

Yahoo, You Flubbed News About The Future Of Delicious, Not The Press

Yesterday, like many news outlets, we saw a leaked slide that suggested that Yahoo might be closing Delicious. We didn't publish until we had a statement from Yahoo. That statement clarified nothing. So it's galling to have Yahoo today acting like the press got it all wrong. Yahoo "Disappointed" Over "Little Context" On the Delicious Blog today, Yahoo writes: Many of you have read the news stories about Delicious that began appearing yesterday. We’re genuinely sorry to have these stories appear with so little context for our loyal users.... We can only imagine how upsetting the news cove [...]

Not So Fast: Delicious.com May Survive, After All

Responding to the frenzy that happened yesterday after news spread that Delicious.com was likely to be shut down, Yahoo says the service may live on, after all. In a post today on the Delicious.com blog, the company emphatically says Delicious isn't closing. Is Delicious being shut down? And should I be worried about my data? - No, we are not shutting down Delicious. While we have determined that there is not a strategic fit at Yahoo!, we believe there is a ideal home for Delicious outside of the company where it can be resourced to the level where it can be competitive. What is Yaho [...]

10 Alternatives To Delicious.com Bookmarking

It looks like your (and my) personal search engine of interesting web pages is about to go away. Yahoo hasn't formally confirmed, but all signs point to the impending demise of delicious.com. What are we going to do with all of our bookmarks? There are several alternatives available and, if you're like me, you're going to have to test some of them out until you find the one that best fits how you like to save bookmarks and later search for them. You'll also want to export your existing delicious.com bookmarks and, if possible, import them into the new service you choose. Instructions on [...]

Confirmed: Yahoo Closing Buzz, Traffic APIs – Maybe Delicious & AltaVista

News is traveling fast about a leaked slide from a Yahoo "all hands" meeting earlier this week that listed several products -- including Delicous and AltaVista -- to be "sunsetted." Yahoo confirms that Yahoo Buzz will be closed, as will the Traffic APIs. Delicious seems likely to go, too. Here's the statement we received from Yahoo: Part of our organizational streamlining involves cutting our investment in underperforming or off-strategy products to put better focus on our core strengths and fund new innovation in the next year and beyond. We continuously evaluate and prioritize our po [...]

Yahoo Makes Delicious.com Cool Again

Think you can't teach an old dog new tricks? Take a look at the new features at Delicious.com and you'll think otherwise. Yahoo has announced a series of upgrades that makes Delicious -- the granddaddy of social bookmarking -- more relevant and useful than it's been in years. Sure, SEOs and online marketers have continued to appreciate the value of getting a bookmark on the Delicious "Popular" page, but regular users will appreciate today's upgrades. They involve a new take on hot/fresh bookmarks, new sharing features, and improved search functionality. Here's a look. Twitter-based Fres [...]

Triage Time For Yahoo, Delicious Founder Latest Departure

Are we watching an awkward transition at Yahoo or something more like a collapse? To declare my biases openly, I hope it's the former. Yahoo and Google need strong competitors to keep them on their toes. But what's happening at Yahoo certainly does not look good. The company has gone through several "reorgs" in the past year and it appears there's another one coming. The impending reorganization seems, paradoxically, both a driver of the recent executive departures and a response to it. Techmeme has lots of gossip and discussion about the Yahoo employee exits. In particular, TechCrunch repor [...]

Yahoo Tests Delicious Integration In Search Results

Yahoo has sent word that they are testing integration of data from their Delicious social bookmarking site within the Yahoo search results pages. For some users, a search will now show whether a page listed in Yahoo results is also on Delicious and how it has been tagged. It brings back memories of Yahoo My Web integration and, before that, how the Yahoo Directory used to work. More below. The screenshot above from Yahoo is an example of this. In a search on java, you can see under the page description for Java.com how you are also told: 40 people bookmarked this page under: java - softwar [...]

The Social Side Of Trustrank

A newly published patent application from Yahoo, Using community annotations as anchortext, provides a hint at some of the research and work that Yahoo is doing to incorporate user created tags, annotations, bookmarks, and social profiles into the way that they index and organize information, and rank that information. Danny asked me if I would mention a recent SEO by the Sea post here, where I went into some depth on the processes described in that document. It is at Social Trustrank and User Annotations as Anchor Text. One of the most interesting aspects the patent covers is how trustrank [...]
