    All other things being equal, it can be helpful to have experience in the specific industry you are working on for the client.

    That being said, it’s not strictly necessary to have direct experience working in an industry you are marketing for. If you have a solid relationship with the client, you are working in partnership, and the client can offer their insights into the campaign.

    Most of the time, it’s fairly easy to pick out the key players in the market pretty quickly, and make a plan for the client. At the same time however, I’ve also found that as an SEO, after a while you learn about topics in great detail that you never even knew existed, which is all part of the fun. ;)
